Why the WLTP figure is not what you see

WLTP is a type-approval standard. It is useful for comparing cars, but it is not the figure you will see on your dashboard. Four variables explain almost all of the difference.

Speed

Consumption grows with the square of speed. At 130 km/h, consumption is ≈40% higher than at 90 km/h.

Temperature

In the cold, the battery performs worse and the cabin needs heating. Below 5°C, range drops by 15–25%.

Style

Hard acceleration uses energy that regenerative braking cannot fully recover. The difference between eco and sporty driving is 10–15%.

Load

Weight, passengers and drag. Each passenger adds ~80 kg.

Frequently asked questions

Why is real-world range different from WLTP?

WLTP is a type-approval standard that uses a standardised cycle at mild temperatures and moderate speeds. In real life, speed, temperature, driving style and weight all play a part, and the official cycle does not capture them.

Where does the data for calculating real-world range come from?

We start from the model's official specifications (battery, combined efficiency, weight) and apply a physics model that adjusts consumption to the conditions you set. The model is calibrated with real data from the QuantumDrive community.

Does temperature really affect range that much?

Yes. At low temperatures the battery chemistry performs worse and energy is spent heating the cabin and the battery itself. Above 30°C, climate control also adds to consumption, although with a smaller impact.

How do weight and passengers affect range?

Each passenger adds around 80 kg. The impact is modest compared with speed or temperature: with 4 passengers in addition to the driver, range usually drops by 3% to 6%.

Can I plan a route using my car's real-world range?

Yes. The QuantumDrive route planner uses the same physics model (plus more variables such as elevation and wind) to calculate charging stops, journey time and realistic consumption.
