Energy-saving certificates for electric cars in Spain

What is a CAE?

A Certificado de Ahorro Energético (CAE) certifies final energy savings under Spain's energy-efficiency system. Replacing a combustion car with a battery-electric car can qualify when the applicable requirements are met. This is a Spanish scheme; it is not an equivalent grant in the UK, Italy or Portugal.

Check the vehicle and the replacement

Eligibility depends on the vehicles, the replacement dates, ownership history, evidence of the energy-saving action and the current requirements of the applicable standardised measure. An electric car purchase alone does not establish eligibility. Ask for a pre-check before assigning any energy-saving rights.

How much might you receive?

The payment depends on the recognised savings, the vehicle being replaced and the commercial conditions agreed with authorised participants. Documents and process

1. Request a pre-check for the old vehicle and the electric replacement.
2. Provide the requested identity, ownership, registration and purchase documents.
3. Review the assignment of energy-saving rights and the proposed terms.
4. The authorised participants verify the evidence and coordinate certification and payment.

CAE, grants and tax relief are different

Plan Auto+, Spanish IRPF deductions and CAE payments have separate conditions and evidence requirements. Potential compatibility is not a guarantee that every applicant can receive every amount.
